Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe

The Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) is a biennial panel survey that provides longitudinal data on the living conditions of older Europeans. First conducted in 2004, the study has since followed the health, social life, economic circumstances, retirement, and subjective well-being of European citizens aged 50 and older.

SHARE enables researchers around the world to study a wide range of topics across disciplines such as demography, economics, epidemiology, medicine, gerontology, psychology, sociology, and public health. In 2011, SHARE became a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC).

The Swedish SHARE node is hosted at Umeå University.

Access to research data

SHARE-ERIC aims to make SHARE data available to researchers worldwide as soon as possible. Access to SHARE data is provided free of charge in accordance with a publication policy that ensures rapid and straightforward access for all scientific users worldwide, following individual registration. Full details on the application and registration process are available on the SHARE-ERIC website.

What may SHARE data be used for?

SHARE data may be used exclusively for scientific research and must be handled in accordance with European Union and national data protection regulations, as well as the SHARE terms of use. SHARE-ERIC assures study participants that their data will not be used for any other purposes; consequently, the data may not be used for non-scientific purposes such as commercial use.

In accordance with applicable legal requirements and ethical guidelines governing the collection of SHARE data, all applicants must confirm and agree that they will use the data solely for scientific purposes. As part of the registration process, applicants are also required to provide relevant information about their scientific field and research orientation.

Available datasets

An overview of current datasets from different waves of SHARE, as well as other datasets available through the SHARE Research Data Center, can be found in SHARE’s Data Documentation (at share-eric.eu).

The documentation also includes questionnaires from the surveys, methodological descriptions, and SHARE technical working papers.

In addition, several national record linkage projects have been carried out, enabling the linkage of administrative register data to SHARE data at the country level. More information on these datasets is available via SHARE Record Linkage Data.
