Swedish Citizen Panel
CORS includes the Citizen Panel (Medborgarpanelen) at the SOM Institute, which is a research-based, non-commercial web panel. It consists of approximately 70,000 active participants. Some have chosen to join the panel on their own initiative, while others have been randomly recruited through the Swedish population register. Each year, several data collections are carried out, along with new recruitment rounds for the Citizen Panel.
With many years of experience in question design, experiments, conjoint analyses, and longitudinal studies, the Citizen Panel offers data collection with a high degree of flexibility in terms of survey design and implementation.
The Citizen Panel and the SOM Institute are based at the University of Gothenburg.
Collect data in the Swedish Citizen Panel
The Citizen Panel is a flexible and powerful resource for data collection, offering researchers the opportunity to submit their own research questions to participants, conduct scientific experiments, or follow groups over time.

Collaborate and collect data
The Citizen Panel is intended for researchers and its primary purpose is to facilitate and streamline research in areas such as democracy, public opinion, political behavior, communication, psychology, and many other academic disciplines.
The Citizen Panel welcomes applications from researchers regardless of discipline and accepts requests on an ongoing basis. Survey invitations are sent to panel participants several times a year.
The aim is for the infrastructure to be fast, open, and flexible — a natural choice for researchers who wish to study specific groups, conduct experiments, follow individuals over time, or closely examine current events.
Since its launch in 2010, the Citizen Panel has collected data in collaboration with more than 400 research projects from universities and research institutions in Sweden and internationally.
More information and application
Research projects interested in applying for collaboration are encouraged to send in an application. More information, contact details and the application form can be found at the SOM Institute’s website.
Survey Methodology Research
Within the framework of CORS, and through the SOM surveys and the Citizen Panel, a substantial amount of in-house research is conducted in the field of survey methodology. This research primarily aims to strengthen and further develop the methods used in survey-based studies.
In order for surveys to be as effective and scientifically sound as possible, it is essential to maintain the trust of those who participate in the studies.
Survey methodology research focuses on identifying what defines a high-quality survey. This may include studying the effects of incentives, how long different questions take to answer, or what time of day is most appropriate for sending reminder text messages. It can also involve examining how researchers should interpret and analyze certain results, and how these interpretations may change over time.
The methodological research is published in the report series The SOM Institute’s Notes on Survey Methodology, which is openly accessible to anyone interested. Publications from the survey methodology research can be found at the SOM Institute’s webpages at gu.se.
